Apparently, the question of the relevance of the metadata embedded within the image for search engine relevance and ranking is a hotly debated topic within the SEO experts. Last week, I’ve decided to carry out my own research, I embedded a ’secret’ keyword into all the metadata section of an image and uploaded it to my blog and his the publish button. Please note that prior to the test, I carried out a search for that ’secret’ keyword and the results returned by Google is zero. Weeks went by and the result for that particular keyword is still zero, I google for the post and discovered that Google crawled the post last week. Conclusion? Metadata does not influence or determine the ranking of your image. Insert Metadata Keywords Into Image Most image editing software can perform the basic task of inserting exif metadata keywords into jpeg, png, gif and more. Photoshop is one of them. To insert metadata into images in photoshop, go to ‘file’ then ‘file info’. A dialog box will appear and key in the relevant metadata keywords. Remove Metadata Keywords Since metadata keywords do not influence your image ranking in search engine, the next logical step is to remove them. This enables you to reduce around 10 - 30kb off from your image, depending on a number of factors.
